The teams didn't disclose terms of Courtois' transfer, but multiple outlets report Real Madrid will pay Chelsea £35 million (€39 million/$45 million) for his services.

'It's a very important decision for me, for my career, and also for my personal life, ' he said.

Kepa arrives in a £71.8million deal after Chelsea paid the Spaniard's release clause in his Athletic Bilbao contract.

The 23-year-old is expected to sign for the Premier League side on Wednesday, with current goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois poised to move to Real Madrid.

Madrid's starting goalkeeper has been Keylor Navas, who helped the club win the last three Champions League titles.

Chelsea added in a statement that subjects to the completion of the Courtois deal, Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic would join the Blues from Real on a season-long loan.

The Croatia worldwide revealed during the World Cup that he would seek a move away from the Bernabeu this summer as more than half of his appearances over the past three seasons have come from the bench.

His future has always been speculated amid Madrid's pursuit of Manchester United keeper David de Gea, however, the veteran has played a key role in the capital. Mario Stanić was the first, followed by goalkeeper Matej Delač, striker Stipe Perica, and offensive midfielder Marijo Pašalić, though they have all been sent out on loan from The Blues.

Kepa was close to joining Real Madrid for as little as €20m in January, but the deal was blocked by then-coach Zinedine Zidane, and Athletic responded by committing their prized asset to a new long-term contract, which increased his buyout figure to €80m.

The Blues faced a race against time as to sign the young global before the Premier League transfer window closes on Thursday at 18:00 CEST - tasked with convincing the shot-stopper to move to England, despite Kepa having just renewed his contract.
