Mendocino Complex fire: California’s largest ever wildfire in pictures

The so-called Mendocino Complex has now surpassed the Thomas Fire, which burned 114,100 hectares in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties in 2017, as the largest wildfires in California history.

After a day of hot, dry winds fueled by a high-pressure system on Monday, progress was made on the smaller River Fire, as fire personnel reached 78 percent containment on the 48,920-acre blaze as of 7 a.m. Tuesday, a Cal Fire incident update said. Cal Fire says the total blaze is now 30% contained. The entire so-called Mendocino Complex Fire is now one of the largest on record in the state, officials said.

According to Daniel Ramey, the PIO for Peardale Chicago Park Fire, "The team has seen a large amount of wildlife in the area - elks, coyotes, rabbits, deer, eagles etc".

The fires have spread rapidly in recent days to burn 283,800 acres of land - an area nearly the size of Los Angeles. It continues to threaten 9,300 homes and structures in Lake, Mendocino and Colusa counties as almost 4,000 firefighters work to take hold of the aggressive flames. The expansive fire is burning north of Clear Lake and through the Mendocino National Forest. The fast moving brush fire has burned at least 4,000 acres.

Typically, temperatures dip and humidity rises overnight, giving fire crews a window to slow down the spread of the wildfires.

Can be used for fires, farming and everything else, ' Trump tweeted Monday afternoon. Another 12 homes and 14 structures have been damaged, too, and 9,300 homes and other buildings are still threatened by the inferno, officials say.

For the second time in less than eight months, California broke its record for the largest fire in the state's history.

Gates' letter, which was in an easily modified Microsoft Word file, and saved it as a.PDF, which gave it more authenticity. That was somewhat surprising given that the defense counsel has thrown relatively few questions at prosecution witnesses.

The fires, known as the Mendocino Complex, are burning around 100 miles north of San Francisco. Two years ago, the Clayton fire tore through nearly 4,000 acres and 300 structures, many of them mobile homes and rentals.

"It is being diverted into the Pacific Ocean", the president tweeted Sunday.

What are firefighters doing to stop the Mendocino Complex Fire?

Firefighters were battling the Mendocino Complex blaze supported by helicopters and airplanes - including two huge DC-10s and a 747 jumbo jet - that doused the flames with water.

"Unfortunately, they're not going to get a break anytime soon", Brian Hurley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center, said in an interview on Monday.

The other fire that makes up the "complex" is the River Fire west of Clear Lake.

He said the tweets, after Trump on Sunday approved a federal disaster declaration requested by Governor Jerry Brown for the fires, sparked a barrage of media queries to CalFire.
