The once-prolific actor has been recruited to deepen ties with the the humanitarian field, assisting "cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges", according to Russia's foreign ministry.

In the ever stranger world of politics, Russia's Foreign Ministry has announced that action movie actor Steven Seagal has been appointed special representative to improve Russian and US humanitarian ties.

It said Seagal would "facilitate relations between Russian Federation and the United States in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges".

The foreign ministry said the unpaid role will be similar to the United Nations' goodwill ambassador positions.

Seagal, whose paternal grandparents were Russian Jews, is one of a series of fading western stars who have become political trophies for the Kremlin by taking up Russian citizenship. The countries have also been at odds over the Syrian civil war and the Russian annexation of Crimea.
