EPA Proposes To Freeze Fuel Economy Standards At 37 MPG

The Obama-era standard mandated that automobiles sold by vehicle companies have to reach 50 miles per gallon (MPG) by 2025.

The administration's rule aims to preempt California's Clean Air Act (CAA) waiver and argues that it should be pulled entirely.

After months of discussion and drafts, the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration formally unveiled their plan to rewrite those rules and replace them with ones so lax even automakers are wary.

And one of the best things that we can do as a nation to help make sure that we have clean air and a safe planet is to make sure that we maintain fuel efficiency standards. "More realistic standards can save lives while continuing to improve the environment". "The Trump administration has launched a brazen attack, no matter how it is cloaked, on our nation's clean auto standards", Becerra said on Twitter. Automakers, who had asked to be relieved of some of the mandates, have expressed misgivings about having to accommodate a patchwork of federal and state standards.

Schwarzenegger added that he's "sick and exhausted of these fake conservatives who believe in states' rights to make their own policies - as long as state policy is to pollute more".

But critics of the proposal note that the auto industry had a stretch of strong sales from 2010 to 2017, with several years seeing record sales, because consumers want more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Israeli Airstrike Kills Armed Islamic State Operatives On Border With Syria
Israel sees Iran, and Iran's allies in the Hezbollah Shi'ite military, as a direct threat to its national security. Most of the Golan Heights have been occupied by Israel since the 1967 war.

President Donald Trump said in March a year ago that his administration is working on relaxing the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards set by his predecessor. Electric cars and trucks still account for a tiny fraction of those sold, and driver preference for SUVs, along with relatively low gas prices, have inhibited progress there.

The administration also contends that hiking USA oil consumption by 2 to 3 percent over forecast levels would have a minimal impact on the environment, boosting global average temperature by just "3/1000th of a degree Celsius by 2100".

About a third of these projected savings, or $198 billion, are tied to the agencies' assertion that, by slowing pace at which new vehicles get more expensive, they'll allow people to replace older and less-safe cars more rapidly.

Schwarzenegger and Trump have repeatedly criticized each other over the years, including during Trump's presidency.

States that joined the lawsuit said the change would end up costing more money at the pump because vehicles won't go as far on a gallon of gas, and more misery for those suffering pollution-exacerbated maladies such as asthma.

Today's cars contain so many computers and must be manufactured to produce so much horsepower out of as little motor as possible that they have become nothing more than rolling computers on the brink of failure. CARB was created in 1967 to fight increasing air pollution in the state due to population growth, and its rules have been adopted by 12 other states and Washington D.C., according to the State of Maryland.
