Eel Fire sparks in Mendocino County, in addition to Mendocino Complex Fire

The newspaper reports that, "Winds from the west are pushing the fire along, sending smoke into Yuba City and Marysville, but by late Tuesday fire officials said the blaze was 40 percent contained".

"California can expect to see hot, dry and breezy conditions through the end of the week", CNN meteorologist Gene Norman said.

More than 13,000 firefighters are battling fires with the help of crews from as far away as Florida.

The largest blaze burned in the Redding area, in Shasta County north of Sacramento.

Officials say 20 people who had been reporting missing in California's devastating wildfires are now accounted for.

"We're concerned with individuals that have no family", Bosenko said.

The Carr Fire is so large and intense that it created its own localized weather system, making it hard to predict which way the blaze will spread.

The fire near Covelo prompted evacuation orders for about 60 homes in the farming and ranching area on the edge of the Mendocino National Forest. Roughly 15,000 residents have been evacuated. Flames had destroyed one home and damaged two others as of Thursday afternoon.

The Carr fire began last Monday after a vehicle suffered mechanical failure, Cal Fire said; fuelled by high temperatures, low humidity and wind, the fire doubled in size over the weekend.

Relief crews came from other areas to Redding on Wednesday so firefighters could be together and grieve the death of colleague Jeremy Stoke, Chief Cullen Kreider said.

Twin fires also burned in Mendocino and Lake counties, affecting 14 homes and threatened 12,000 more.

"We've started off with a bang, " Cal Fire spokesman Scott McLean said.

On Wednesday, Governor Jerry Brown warned Californians the threat of wildfires is now the "new normal", and said the disasters will likely get more destructive and expensive in the future.
