Passengers and crew survive Mexico air crash

An aeroplane of Aeromexico Connect, regional operator of Mexico's largest airline Aeromexico, is pictured at the airstrip at Benito Juarez global airport in Mexico City, Mexico, November 28, 2017.

The plane made an emergency landing about six miles (10 km) from the airport, Alejandro Cardoza, a spokesman for the state's civil protection agency, said on local television.

Ramin Parsa, 32, who was shooting the video, drops his cell phone about 40 seconds into the clip as all hell breaks loose after the Tuesday crash.

Passenger Jackeline Flores and her daughter escaped from a hole in the main body of the plane as the cabin filled up with smoke and flames, according to The Telegraph.

"Within a couple of minutes, the plane just started shaking and we heard a loud noise, we don't know behind us, we don't know right or left, but we just heard a loud noise behind us, and the next thing we knew, [the plane] was starting to smoke", Rivera said.
"Honestly, I thought, 'Why in the world are we even taking off?'" said Dorelia Rivera, also from Chicago, to NBC News.

The mid-sized jet was nearly full, with 103 people including two infants and four crew members on board, when it crashed at about 4 p.m. local time (2100 GMT), authorities said.

The Aeromexico plane reportedly crashed shortly after take-off from Durango.

Aeromexico said Tuesday it is aware of an accident involving one of its planes in Durango, Mexico, according to the airline's Twitter feed.

A spokesperson for Durango, Mexico's Civil Protection said an Aeromexico regional jet that crashed just after takeoff caught fire after the crash. The aircraft was carrying 101 people on board, including 97 passengers and 4 crew members.

Mechanical failure and human error could be factors, but certainly the weather was not favourable.

About 85 people face been reported injured, with the pilot the worst off, but authorities have said he's in a stable condition.

Officials said 49 people were hospitalised - most with minor injuries.

The Guadalupe Victoria airport has been closed since the plane went down near the runway during an afternoon storm.

David Gleave, a United Kingdom -based crash investigator and air safety consultant, said the absence of fatalities reflected the relatively low speed of the impact, as well as decades of work in improving aircraft design.

A Mexican pilots association said past year there were 66 accidents and 173 incidents in Mexican aviation.

In a statement, Aeroméxico said they "deeply regret" the accident, while Brazilian plane company Embraer said they had sent a team to the crash site.
