Wildfires blaze in Napa County and Mendocino

Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko said they had not yet been positively identified but were believed to be victims identified by relatives on Facebook and in news media reports as James Roberts, 5, his sister Emily Roberts, 4, and Melody Bledsoe, 70. The sheriff cited evidence that door-to-door notifications were made in the area. A count by The Associated Press found at least 300 of those structures were homes. Evacuation orders were lifted on some areas on Monday.

The fire prompted mandatory evacuations for tens of thousands of people in Redding. The fire grew slightly Sunday to 139 square miles (360 square kilometers). A total of 17 large fires are burning across the state.

The fire had burned through 150 square miles by late Sunday and was growing, but Cal Fire Incident Commander Brett Gouvea said it was not moving deeper into this town of 92,000. That's how quickly this fire moved.

Bledsoe and his wife had raised the two great-grandchildren since birth. He bought his three-bedroom house previous year using a loan from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Two people were arrested Sunday on suspicion of looting homes that had been evacuated earlier due to an explosive wildfire. The fire has claimed the lives of six people, including two firefighters and two children. Engineer Scott Pederson and firefighters Tyler Barnes and Brian Cardoza have been released from a hospital, the fire department said Friday in a news release.

"The winds, high temperatures and dry vegetation still have the potential to fuel fire growth", Cal Fire said.

Tired after more than a day on the fire lines, the 43-year-old said when his Gila, New Mexico-based crew does leave California, he expects to go north into OR, where new fires are kicking up.

"These fires are exacting a devastating monetary and emotional toll on residents across the state and it is imperative that they are aware of every resource available to them to fix and rebuild", commented Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones.

Bledsoe said he did not know his home was in danger when he left his wife and great-grandchildren to run an errand on Thursday. They're investigating to see if the Bledsoe home got a warning call or a door-knock. Crews have repaired some gas lines, but utility officials said the return of service for all residents will be slow.

At the same time, his sons also tried to get to the house, he said, and heat and flames were so intense as one son tried "it burned his hair off". The origins of the fire have been traced to the "mechanical failure" of a vehicle in Whiskeytown, which is about 10 miles northwest of Redding, officials said.

His granddaughter and wife were also on the phone, he said. Another method known as the Integrated Public Alert & Warning System can be directed to any cellphone within reach of a particular transmission tower, said Sherry Bartolo, operations manager for the Shasta County dispatch centre.

Alyce Macken said she had only minutes to flee her home in the town of Redding with her husband Ted as the flames swept closer.
