Thomas enjoys the champagne feeling of being a Tour de France victor

His victory continued Team Sky's domination of the Tour de France, with its British riders claiming six of the last seven editions, much to the disquiet of the French sporting public, who have given Thomas, Froome and their teammates a mixed reception over the course of the three-week race.

Even though Froome was cleared of doping days before the start of the Tour, that didn't stop some fans from abusing the British team's riders throughout the three-week race. It's just incredible. The last time I cried is when I got married.

Pundits agreed that the 21-year-old Egan Bernal, who produced some unbelievable work in the mountains for his leaders on his Tour debut, would probably soon win the race.

Team Sky principal Sir Dave Brailsford said: "We're just pretty emotional". "Normally that stage is really hard but today I just seemed to float around it". All the Welsh flags and the support - I've won the Tour and how does that happen? "Nico was on the radio and told me to make sure I win the Tour, don't risk anything". Not this time. From that point he rode the most brilliant Tour, tactically astute but also sensitive to Froome's situation.

Dutchman Tom Dumoulin finished second for Team Sunweb after also taking the runner-up spot in the Giro d'Italia won by Froome, who ended up third overall.

Froome's second place in the time trial means the four-time Tour champion climbs to third overall, leapfrogging Slovenia's Primoz Roglic.

Dumoulin beat defending champion Chris Froome by one second to win stage 20, a race against the clock from Saint-Pee-Sur-Nivelle to Espelette spanning 31km.

In the aftermath of his win, Thomas told ITV Sport that it was "the stuff of dreams".

On his Team Sky team-mates, Thomas added: "We stuck together through some tough times and really stayed strong". When an on-form Thomas won back-to-back stages in the Alps, winning on Alpe d'Huez in the yellow jersey, Team Sky were handed a dilemma.

Geraint Thomas ascended to the pinnacle of cycling on Sunday, saying his historic Tour de France victory was proof of the power of "hard work" and insisting his triumph had not been aided by the use of any drugs.

"When I had a wobble on that corner, I thought, "Chill out a bit". I'm 27 years old and hopefully I'll get stronger, especially in the mountains, and hopefully one day I will be able to win".

"Because we've been teammates and friends for so long, it made it easier to communicate honestly", Froome said.

Thomas got the honour of lining up in pole position as the Tour experimented with an F1-style grid for this short, sharp mountain stage, but it was a day filled with peril for Team Sky.

Frenchman Pierre Latour will finish 13th overall and will clinch the white jersey for the best Under-25 rider.
