"For Hepatitis E and Hepatitis A Virus infections, hygiene and sanitation play a major role, while for Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C Virus, lifestyle and awareness are extremely important" he added.

Approximately 1 in 12 persons worldwide, or some 500 million people, are living with chronic viral hepatitis.

Hepatology Society General Secretary Shahinul Alam said 60% of cases of liver cirrhosis in Bangladesh were caused by HBV, while 30% was due to HCV.

Hepatitis simply means inflammation of the liver and can be caused by different things.

Millions of people across the world and in the WHO South-East Asia Region are infected with viral hepatitis without knowing and without receiving treatment, according to Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health and Population organized Saturday a campaign to detect Hepatitis C virus at Al-Azhar Park from 4:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. titled, "Virus C: Us or It ". Whilst sharing the Information of Hepatitis virus the experts informed that according to WHO, India is one of the 11 countries which carries nearly 50% of the global burden of chronic hepatitis.

The results of this survey highlight the very low levels of awareness of hepatitis C and the factors that can put people at risk of infection.

People who are at most risk are those working in health care professions, people with multiple sexual partners, intravenous drug users and haemophiliacs.
