Cubs acquire Cole Hamels in trade with Rangers

The Chicago Cubs have acquired veteran pitcher Cole Hamels from the Texas Rangers.

Hamels threw a no-hitter against the Cubs at Wrigley Field on July 25, 2015. On Thursday, days out from another trade deadline, the Chicago Cubs brought Hamels back to Wrigley - where they will lean on the veteran lefty to help lock down the National League Central title and carry them deep into October. The Cubs will also reportedly be picking up a just a portion of Hamels' remaining salary obligations. Hamels, 34, has a 5-9 record and a 4.72 ERA this season but has been much better on the road - away from hitter-friendly Texas - where he has a 2.93 ERA. He is 7-6 with a 3.48 ERA in 16 career postseason starts.

Bomb detonated at U.S. embassy in Beijing
Photos on social media showed a large amount of smoke and police vehicles surrounding the embassy after the incident. Video has emerged showing police frantically taping off an area around what appears to be a damaged patrol vehicle .

"He has pitched in some pretty big games [and] he's done very well", Cubs Manager Joe Maddon told reporters Thursday, as the Hamels talks were heating up. He's a great competitor, got good stuff. Which will nearly certainly be bought out given that the option would pay Hamels $20 million next year. Among starting pitchers with at least 90 innings this year, Chatwood's 19.4% walk rate leads the league ... by almost SIX PERCENTAGE POINTS. Had the Cubs not just traded for Cole Hamels, we'd be back here today wondering how much longer the Cubs can keep doing this with Tyler Chatwood, who cannot now throw strikes at a rate even *close* to acceptable enough to keep him in the rotation of a contender. Darvish and Chatwood were the centerpieces of the Cubs' offseason, as the two free agent signees cost a total of $164 million. My guess remains six-man rotation in the short-term, at least, which means Chatwood would get at least another start. The teams had agreed to the trade Thursday, pending physicals for the players involved.
