Pa. Woman Impaled In Chest By Beach Umbrella At Maryland Beach

She suffered a non-threatening injury - and was taken to hospital.

Officials in a Maryland resort town say a woman was gored in the chest by a wind-blown beach umbrella.

The woman, who was visiting the beach from Pennsylvania, was in stable condition on Monday (Tuesday NZT), according to Jessica Waters, the spokeswoman.

"This is just a ideal example of how if you're not cautious enough, an umbrella can turn tragic pretty instantly", she said.

Waters said Ocean City has wider beaches than Rehoboth, adding, "We don't have a density issue they were running into". She was flown on a Maryland State Police helicopter to a nearby hospital so that doctors could perform X-rays to determine the best way to remove it. She is expected to make a full recovery, WMAR reported.

A similar incident happened last week on a beach in New Jersey.

"It's just a clear example of how, if an umbrella is not properly installed or left unattended, it only takes one gust of wind to have it be a very serious hazard to somebody", she said.

Waters said beachgoers need to be certain umbrellas are anchored 18-24 inches below the sand throughout the day, and they should lower the rental umbrella when they are finished with it.

The pole of the umbrella had to be cut in half by a fire crew in order to be removed, local media report.
