Nicole has gone on to an acting career, winning a 2016 GLAAD award for her performance in United States show Royal Pains.

The CW's Supergirl will be adding three new characters for this fall's fourth season: Manchester Black, Dreamer, and Colonel Haley.

The Hollywood Reporter described Maines' character as a "soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others".

Maines came out to her parents in the late '90s/early 2000s when trans women were being portrayed by cisgender men as either sex workers or drugs addicts, an image Maines is hoping to break with her new role. "It feels fitting to say with great power, comes great responsibility, I'm nervous because I want to do it right".

"She's so pure", Maines said.

DC and The CW's Supergirl TV show has brought on a brand new superhero whose introduction will be a historic TV event. Per a description, Maines' character is "the newest addition to the CatCo reporting team". 'Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I've learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realise it was insensitive.

Maines' awareness of the societal stakes of representation is clearly on her mind: "I think we're in a time right now where more than ever representation in the media matters", she said.

Maines reveals her character's storyline doesn't necessarily revolve around her being trans. "Nia is so much more than 'the trans superhero, '" she explains, calling out television's habit of focusing exclusively on a trans character's trans experience.

The recent blow-up around Scarlett Johansson, who was set to take on the role of a trans man in an upcoming film until intense criticism of the decision led to her step away from starring in the project, only reinforces Maines point about getting representation right. "We've seen that. But trans people have lives outside of our gender identity and our transness".

Also joining the cast is April Parker Jones (The Last Ship, The Fosters) as Colonel Haley, who's a stickler for the rules.

The fourth season of "Supergirl" returns October 14 on the CW.

Steve Bannon: I didn't like Trump's walk-back on Russian Federation summit
Some 71 percent of Republicans polled approved of his response to Russian Federation , while only 14% of Democrats were in favour. Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Bob Corker said he would consider the proposal but appeared to pour cold water on it.
