Grandmother shot, hostages held at supermarket; 1 woman dead

The gunman fled from cops and took the second female victim with him.

Gene Atkins is being held on a $2-million bail on suspicion of murder for Saturday's attacks, said Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Drake Madison.

Investigators believe about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, a 28-year-old man shot his grandmother multiple times at a home in South Los Angeles. "He was shot, and there was a woman who [.] really worked to try to keep him calm and sort of, nearly advocate on his behalf". A police pursuit led him the grocery as he exchanged gunfire.

He ran into the Trader Joe's after crashing his grandmother's auto outside the store during a police pursuit, police said. Moore said police and firefighters responded quickly but could not save her.

Around 40 to 50 people were held hostage during the incident, according to the Associated Press.

The suspect's name also hasn't yet been released.

The suspect handcuffed himself and surrendered to police three hours after it all began. The LAPD said the investigation is still ongoing. Officers were working to clear the building for further hostages.

The area was expected to reopen around noon.

Kohles says police fired at the male driver and shattered the store's glass doors. He appeared to be handcuffed when he walked out. The suspect appeared to be bleeding from the arm. The situation remains fluid as officers move forward clearing the location.

LAPD officers reportedly rescued a large group of children from the scene of the shooting. No officers were injured.

Terrified shoppers fled in fear after the man opened fire and barricaded himself inside a Trader Joe's store in the suburb of Silver Lake. The store is now on lockdown, but customers are allowed exit through the back of the building. Police confirmed the man was barricaded inside the store.

"We are on standby and prepared to support but no confirmation how many patients may be inside", Stewart added.

Some customers immediately ran out of the store and police surrounded the building.

Aerial video shot from a helicopter showed armed officers carrying shields outside the store and a man walking out with his hands up. Moore later tweeted a tribute to those affected by the incident, saying: "The destructive and tragic consequences one person can inflict are at the forefront of our minds tonight, as is the valor & dedication of our men & women who strived to protect so many innocent people-Our thoughts, prayers & hearts are with all effected by this senseless incident".

Corado was killed by the gunman inside the store at some point during the standoff, police told the Los Angeles Times.
