The White House later said the United States president had been saying "no" to further questions from reporters and that the threat to the United States electoral system "still exists".

"He has an interesting idea", Trump said, adding later: "I think that's an incredible offer".

Putin first proposed swapping officials for questioning at a Monday summit with Trump in Helsinki, offering to make Russian authorities indicted in Mueller's probe available for questioning - but only if the United States also granted Russian officials similar access to current and former American officials.

More outrage has come with the news that Trump and Putin might be working out a deal whereby special counsel Robert Mueller would get access to interviews with Russians indicted after allegedly hacking Democrats, and Russia would get to question USA officials it suspects of interfering in Russian affairs in exchange. Mr. Trump's relationship with Putin has come under close scrutiny amid the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Trump had said he and Putin discussed reducing nuclear weapons worldwide. Part of the reason for the delay is logistics related.

Trump tweeted a list of topics discussed at the summit, including terrorism, security for Israel, Mideast peace, Ukraine, North Korea and more, and wrote: "There are many answers, some easy and some hard, to these problems... but they can ALL be solved!"

'I think we will learn more. Wednesday night, Trump had continued to walk back his presser announcement he was taking Putin at his word that he had not meddled in the USA 2016 election.

The Defense Ministry made a string of announcements about progress on the weapons, unveiled in a speech by President Vladimir Putin in March.

"That would be the last time you ever have a foreign leader meet with a president of the U.S. privately", he told Politico. But that is the president's prerogative, ' Coats said. He just said it's not Russian Federation. Jeff Glor: "But you haven't condemned Putin specifically".

But Trump has largely shrugged off the criticism and took aim at the "fake news media" Thursday for failing to recognize his achievements. -Russian relations are "in some ways worse than during the Cold War", but that the meeting with Trump allowed a start on "the path to positive change".

During a news conference, Mr Trump was asked whether he believed USA intelligence agencies' conclusions or Mr Putin about whether Russian Federation had meddled.
