Trump says he misspoke on Russian Federation election meddling

President Trump on Tuesday claimed he has full faith in US intelligence agencies, on the heels of his widely criticized meeting and press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During a news conference following their meeting, Trump declined to endorse the USA intelligence community's assessment that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election over Putin's denial.

On Tuesday, Trump again stressed that he had "full faith" in the USA intelligence community and accepted their assessment that Russian Federation had, unquestionably, meddled in the presidential election.

Ryan also said special counsel Robert Mueller should be allowed to continue his investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election, adding "nothing has changed. There was no collusion at all".

Pointing to a quote from the transcript, Trump said he had misspoken at the joint news briefing with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He told reporters at the White House: "In a key statement in my remarks, I said the word "would" instead of "wouldn't".

"They definitely interfered in our election", he said. Putin said he wanted Trump to win the race against Democrat Hillary Clinton.

During the press conference, he appeared to clearly side with the Kremlin over his intelligence agencies, who accuse Putin of orchestrating cyber-attacks on the U.S. and for attempts to undermine the USA election which saw Trump elected. Moran claims he made clear when he was in Moscow that Russian interference in USA elections would not be tolerated.

The president came under widespread, bipartisan condemnation on Monday for not backing his intelligence community's assessment that Moscow had interfered in the election.

Trump tweeted his support for the intelligence community later Monday after his comments created a backlash from both Democrats and Republicans. "I met with Russian president Vladimir Putin in an attempt to tackle some of the most pressing issues facing humanity", Trump said.

The movie-star turned Republican politician addressed the USA president directly in the video, which he tweeted to his 4 million+ followers.

"President Trump must clarify his statements in Helsinki on our intelligence system and Putin", former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tweeted.

The president took to Twitter Tuesday morning to double down on his assessment that the meeting with Putin was successful, even more so than his meeting with the United States' closest allies at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
