Hurricane Chris threatens East Coast with dangerous rip currents through weekend

The downgrade comes one day after Chris quickly escalated into a Category 2 storm packing 105 miles per hour winds.

The center of the storm was located 245 miles southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and 470 miles southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland.

Atlantic Ocean beachgoers should be wary of heavy surf and life-threatening rip-currents this week as Hurricane Chris swirls off the U.S. East Coast.

While it is expected to mostly miss the United States, the storm has already created unsafe conditions, and beach patrol officials in Ocean City, Maryland had already made 141 rescues as of Monday due to strong rip currents.

With Tropical Storm Chris swirling off the North Carolina coast, North Carolina officials are watching the storm closely and telling those on the coast to be cautious. The storm was just upgraded from Tropical Storm to hurricane status and has gained considerable forward motion as it bears down on the Canadian Maritimes and Newfoundland-Labrador with winds of 155 kilometers per hour (100 MPH).

"While we do not expect major impacts from this storm, we will continue to watch it closely".

Post-tropical storm Chris barreled towards Newfoundland Thursday, bringing powerful winds, heavy downpours and pounding surf.

Dry air will also wrap into higher latitude systems as seen by the yellow colors spiraling into the non-tropical cyclone northeast of Chris. The hurricane is expected to strenghten over the next two days.

Forecaster Marco Petagna said: "From Monday and Tuesday next week there's signs of fresher air pushing gradually south-eastwards across the United Kingdom with a chance of some rain nearly anywhere". The hurricane is forecast to remain on this general heading with an increase in forward speed for the next several days.
