Trudeau, Harper, Singh lose thousands of followers as Twitter purges fake accounts

The most-followed account on Twitter belongs to popular singer Katy Perry, who lost 1.5 million followers; the number now stands at 108.1 million.

Musician Katy Perry, the most followed account on Twitter, lost about 2.7 million followers in the purge.

The great Twitter purge has begun - and famous users have already lost millions of fake followers.

Having a strong follower base on Twitter is a thing of pride for many, but it serves a greater objective to celebs and social media influencers, who can negotiate deals with advertisers by boasting their impressive follower count.

Twitter said Wednesday that ordinary people probably won't see much of a difference in their number of followers, which could drop only by four or even fewer.

Compared to what some media outlets are reporting other major worldwide political figures lost, Canadian politicians fared relatively well, with most of the top-followed accounts losing between 3,000 and 1,000 followers.

‘Sharif, Maryam will be arrested on their arrival’
The NAB has already declared that Mr Sharif and Maryam will be arrested upon their arrival at any airport of the country. NAB officials have said they have obtained the necessary warrants in this regard and will arrest the duo when they land.

According to Twitter, the new measures are aimed at improving accuracy in a bid to make the site a "more trusted service for public conversation". On 11 July, the follower count was 26.68 million and now the figure is 26.55 million. Twitter initially warned that its culling of fake followers would affect about 6% of all follows, so Perry actually may have got off lightly.

"Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate", said Twitter in a blog. Justin Timberlake rounds out the top 10 accounts with the biggest followings, but he's lost around 1.8 million overnight.

"Over the years, we've locked accounts when we detected sudden changes in account behaviour". Trump remains the 18th most-followed person on Twitter.

And while Obama lost more followers than Trump, he also started out with almost double the follow count.

If the owner doesn't respond and reset their password, Twitter locks the account.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump (@realDonaldTrump), possibly Twitter's most controversial major user, saw his follower count drop by about 300,000, from 53.4 million to 53.1 million, on Thursday.
