Liverpool star Dejan Lovren demands respect from critics following World Cup heroics

Lovren's part in Croatia's most famous World Cup run comes two years after he found himself frozen out of the national team set-up, following a disagreement with then-coach Ante Cacic.

The former Southampton man has had a lot of unnecessary flak in recent times, including a whole lot of abuse on social media after he had an absolute stinker in a 4-1 defeat to Spurs at Wembley.

Reaching the final caps a hugely impressive 2018 for Lovren, who came through a hard run of form for Liverpool to play a key part in reaching the UEFA Champions League final in May.

He added: "Modric is the best middle three player in the world and if we win this World Cup, he deserves the Ballon d'Or".

"It's something special for me", Lovren told beIN Sports."From my point of view, people were saying I had a hard season but I don't agree with that".

I took Liverpool to the final of the Champions League.

Even before the World Cup kicked off, the Liverpool defender seemed to think if any Croatian squad can, it's this one.

End of the road for Conte at Chelsea
As for Conte, it will cost Chelsea £9 million to jettison him, as that is how much he is owed for the final year of his contract. Italian Sarri, 59, joined Napoli in 2015 and led them to second behind champions Juventus last season.

"This is something historical for us", said Lovren.

"This is something we will never forget". This is something historic for us.

"After 20 years, people will remember us, not only the '98 team. Now we've got a chance to do something better on Sunday".

However, Lovren believes that his achievements confirm that he is among the world's best players in his position.

Lovren, whose nation are into the semi-finals for the first time since 1998, said Croatia could play with freedom.

Subasic suffered a tight hamstring towards the end of Croatia's quarter-final win over hosts Russian Federation and was unable to take goal-kicks before the tie went to penalties. "After everything that's been said before the game, we showed our character and that we deserve to be in the final".
