Microsoft Surface Go focuses on portability and price

Microsoft just unveiled the Surface Go, its $399 iPad killer.

The original Surface Pro design, which has been around since 2014, is still here. It measures 245 x 175 x 8.3 mm and weighs about 512 grams.

The Verge disagrees with that verdict, however, arguing that the Surface Go "isn't really a direct iPad competitor" as the sole goal of Apple's device is to serve as a tablet, while the Go is closer to a full computer system. Available in both a Wi-Fi and LTE configurations (LTE coming along later in the year), Surface Go will be powered by the 7th Gen Intel Pentium Gold Processor 4415Y.

The Surface Go has two variants: a $399 4 GB RAM version with 128 GB of SSD storage, or one with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB of SSD storage, which bumps the price up to $549.

Depending on the type of customer you are (consumer, business, school), you can get it with Windows 10 Home or Pro, or the S-flavored education-focused version of Windows, which runs only verified apps from the Microsoft Store within Windows.

Panay called the new tablet a "new entry point for the Surface family", citing the $400 Dollars price tag ($529 CAD).

Rupert Murdoch gets go-ahead to bid for all of Sky
Jeff Wlodarczak at Pivotal Research Group said Comcast may succeed in winning Sky but lose out on Fox to Disney . News Corp., which is controlled by the Murdochs, withdrew its bid for Sky soon after.

The Surface Go becomes available for preorder starting July 10 and ships this August.

On Monday, the company teased the upcoming product with a tweet that said "Where will Surface go next?"

The Surface Go is equipped with a custom built high resolution PixelSense display with an aspect ratio of 3:2 that has support for Microsoft's Surface Pen with 4096 different levels of pressure sensitivity, low pen parallax, low latency, and extremely precise for note taking as well as drawing or computer aided graphics purposes. Cellular versions are to come later. It also has 3.5mm audio jack and a USB Type-C 3.1 port that can charge the tablet or transfer data to external devices.

The novelty has received a 10-inch display, built-in stand case-keyboard and is running Windows 10. For an extra couple of hundred dollars, you get a quad-core Core i5 CPU, and if your budget allows it, there are options for a Core i7 CPU, up to 16GB of RAM, and a TB of storage space. Apple's iPad poses another formidable challenge - Surface Go is closer in price to the entry-level ($329) iPad than the more robust iPad Pro.

Microsoft Surface Go has a kickstand like other Surface models.

Microsoft has announced a 10-inch Surface Go which will hit stores on August 2nd. The trackpad also supports five point multi-finger gestures, and you can also connect the new Surface Mobile Mouse if you do not want to use the trackpad.
