"In our opinion, creating and supporting barriers to women seeking to make choices about our own bodies is pretty extreme". Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, on Capitol Hill, July 11, 2018.

The second set will target the three Democrats who voted for Gorsuch - Heidi Heitkamp, of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN, and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

"I wish that he could go back there and vote because I think that he would fully support him".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and other Republicans quickly praised Kavanaugh for his commitment to interpreting the law without considering personal politics. Both explore issues that are deeply relevant to Trump and the ongoing investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election. But their lines of attack have expanded.

The thinking is that if either Republican announces her support early, vulnerable Democrats might more easily follow suit, seeing that their vote would not be decisive.

"Kavanaugh has said that a sitting president should not be criminally indicted, no matter what evidence of wrongdoing is uncovered", Gupta said in a statement. Bill Clinton, for example, "could have focused on Osama bin Laden without being distracted by the Paula Jones sexual harassment case and its criminal investigation offshoots", Kavanaugh wrote.

As a Supreme Court justice, Kavanaugh would make about $255,300 per year.

Democrats, as the Senate minority, have few options to block Kavanaugh.

"For me it's a threshold qualifying question", said Sen. "I will carefully review and consider the record and qualifications of Judge Brett Kavanaugh".

Trump 'Close to Determining' No Mueller Interview, Giuliani Says
Seriously? Is that Trump and Giuliani definition of "truth"? Trump has repeatedly said that he wants to meet with Mueller. Politico's Josh Gerstein was the first to point out the discrepancy between Giuliani's comments and Trump's denial.

Right now, Democrats enjoy a significant enthusiasm advantage in the midterm elections.

Trump's Republicans have a 51-49 Senate majority, enough to confirm Kavanaugh if they stick together. Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska made clear that while they're both in the earliest of stages of reviewing Kavanaugh's record, they both find him to be "qualified" for the position. Kay Cole James, president of the Heritage Foundation, said Trump "has selected yet another highly-qualified individual who, like Neil Gorsuch, will be impartial, fair, and principled". "But nevertheless it's an issue that I certainly will raise with him".

Sen. Bob Casey is the rare Democrat who opposes some abortion rights and who describes himself as "pro-life", but he opposed Trump's nomination for a reason unrelated to abortion and before he knew it was Kavanaugh. As a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, Kavanaugh has a history of ruling against regulations proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). But what, exactly, is their argument to voters?

Manchin, for example, issued a statement about the nomination that said, "The Supreme Court will ultimately decide if almost 800,000 West Virginians with preexisting conditions will lose their health care".

The new campaign will join an increasingly crowded effort by outside groups on both sides of the political spectrum to influence public opinion and senate elections.

Kavanaugh also benefited from a ringing endorsement from former President George W. Bush.

They believe that Special Counsel Robert Mueller may try to make the president testify in his investigation of the Trump campaign's possible links to Russian Federation.

"Judge Kavanaugh's record shows a deep respect for and strict interpretation of the Constitution", said Sen. The President's job is hard enough as is.

Ambitious young lawyers who might someday see themselves as justices also know what it takes to be considered for the plum jobs atop the federal judiciary, Kerr said.
