EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt Resigns

In the very same pair of tweets announcing Pruitt's departure, President Trump named the man who would be taking his place - for now, at least: Andrew Wheeler, the longtime Washington insider confirmed by the Senate as Pruitt's deputy in April. Among his other clients are the uranium mining company Energy Fuels Resources, the utility Xcel Energy, the biofuel firm Growth Energy, and the liquified natural gas company Bear Head LNG-all of which are regulated by the EPA.

"Pruitt abused power in a disgraceful way by using the job for perks and trying to enrich himself and his family", Hurlbut told GTM.

Inhofe praised Pruitt in a statement Thursday for doing "great work" leading the agency.

Frankly, Pruitt's exit is long overdue.

Widespread disgust for Pruitt "should serve as a blaring red siren for the Trump administration", Udall said.

Pruitt previously served as Oklahoma attorney general, a role in which he repeatedly sued the EPA. But some worry that his promotion may accelerate the Trump administration's determined dismantling of the EPA.

Pruitt's replacement, deputy administrator Andrew K. Wheeler, is cut out of the same cloth, according to multiple news reports.

In a year and half, Pruitt managed to squeeze in a staggering number of scandals, spending loads of taxpayer dollars on first-class flights, keeping a "secret calendar" to mask his meetings with industry representatives, and so much else.

Pallone said Wheeler won't make a difference at the agency.

Pruitt made no mention of the various ethics complaints in his resignation letter, instead praising Trump for having "blessed me personally and enabled me to advance your agenda beyond what anyone anticipated".

Brandon Hurlbut, former chief of staff at the Department of Energy, said the ethics complaints are one thing that is likely to change with Wheeler.

Murray Energy employees contributed $103,580 to Trump's campaign committee during the 2016 presidential race, more than those from any other company, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a Washington-based research group.

Likewise, Pruitt's resignation letter was equally as glowing toward the president. No longer a federal employee, Pruitt can't be compelled to speak or otherwise co-operate with the inspector general's investigation.

The path could lead him back to Washington.

Don't expect Pruitt's departure to slow this progress.

Scott Pruitt's tenure as the head of the Environmental Protection Agency ended with his resignation, but political experts in his home state of Oklahoma say he could continue his career in public office. Scott Pruitt has resigned as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, following a series of scandals in how he used the perks of his position for personal gain. Tom Carper of DE, long a vocal critic of Pruitt's.
