Man's 'miraculous' rescue after day treading water

A crewmember on a Norwegian Cruise Line has been found 22 hours after going overboard while sailing near Cuba. A hotel steward onboard the Carnival Glory spotted the man at approximately 1 p.m. Sunday while he was drifting in the water approximately 21 miles north of Cuba.

Carnival Glory is now on a seven night cruise to the Western Caribbean from Miami.

The crew member is being treated by Glory's shipboard medical team, Carnival said.

The crew member is now in stable condition and the incident is also under investigation.

Following the report it received, an HC-144 Ocean Sentry plane sent from Miami began its search 10 minutes later, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The Carnival Glory has rescued a crewmember who went overboard from Norwegian Getaway on Saturday.

The U.S. Coast Guard had been searching for the missing man since he was reported overboard Saturday afternoon.

A spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line - the owners of Norwegian Getaway - described the man's survival as "miraculous". "The Coast Guard was notified and a search and rescue operation ensued near western Cuba". The bridge officers were immediately alerted and launched a lifeboat to pick up the man.

"We did do a search pattern for about two hours, and then they turned back around 9 p.m.", said Schellenberger. The Miami-based cruise line says it's "extremely grateful" to the crew of the Carnival Glory for finding the crew member.

There is no word on how the crew member went overboard, but that person is in stable condition, officials said.
