"Daytime highs for the next three days are still [forecast to be] 31 C, 32 C and the overnight lows are still going to be near 20 C. It's going to be hot and humid through to Thursday", said Zhang.

The heat warning extends throughout the GTA and most of southern Ontario, including Hamilton, Waterloo and Barrie.

The national forecaster says temperatures could reach the mid-30s with humidex values into the mid-40s, while some areas could see severe thunderstorms.

"The high heat and humidity could return on Wednesday", the heat warning reads.

Temperatures approaching 30 C degrees are expected for P.E.I. on Tuesday and will continue on Wednesday, according to the latest Environment Canada forecast.

Overnight low temperatures in the high teens will some relief from the extreme heat.

The Salvation Army was out at Gore Park handing out bottles of water reminding people to heed the warnings and protect themselves, and police have already received a number of calls including one on Appleby Line and Upper Middle Road in Burlington where they rescued a dog from a hot auto where the temperature was 66 degrees.

Drouin says the victims fit the profile of people authorities describe as at risk: those with chronic illness or mental-health problems, people who live alone and people without air conditioning at home.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
