Pedestrian bridge collapse at Mumbai train station injures 5

A portion of a road overbridge at Andheri - connecting two busy train stops - collapsed after heavy rains yesterday. Sawant saw the foot over bridge collapsing from a distance and quickly applied the emergency brakes.

The falling bridge damaged a portion of the platform roof, blocked the railway lines and damaged the high-tension electric wires and overhead power equipments, he added.

Recognising his heroic efforts, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal announced an immediate reward of Rs 5 lakh. Five people were injured. A joint-safety audit would be conducted by the railways, the BMC and IIT at 445 road overbridges, foot overbridges and bridges over pipelines in Mumbai. Don't think anyone is trapped under debris.

Since Monday night, the city was battered with more than 131 mm rainfall and the surroundings got between 130-210 mm, leading to waterlogging in places like Kandivali, Jogeshwari, Andheri, Ghatkopar, Santacruz, Sion, Kings Circle, Matunga, Kurla, Chembur, Tilak Nagar and other areas.

Police official Yaibhav Nigade said at least five people who were walking on the bridge were injured and hospitalised.

Coming nine months after the Elphinstone Road FOB crash and stampede that left 23 commuters dead, Tuesday's incident instilled fear among the commuters, especially since at least three jam-packed locals had passed the bridge seconds before the crash. Prashant Ghag, a commuter says:"When I reached Borivili to board a Churchgate bound train, I came to know that all the lines of Western Railway have come to a halt. A major accident was averted as it was peak hour and a lot of people were around", said Sawant.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety will investigate the incident which has triggered a blame-game between the WR and the BMC. "Our officers have reached to the spot and accessing the situation", chief PRO of western railway Ravinder Bhakar told PTI.

Western Railways tweeted that restoration work of the over-head equipment and tracks between Andheri and Vile Parle station is underway. Reports of water-logging, trees uprooted and heavy traffic jams have been reported from several areas.

Four fire brigade vehicles were rushed to the spot. news agency ANI reported.
