Clippers DeAndre Jordan opts out of contract, becomes free agent

After having a successful rookie season, Smith Jr. could develop into a Chris Paul type player with Jordan around.

The Dallas Mavericks are the heavy favorites to land Jordan, just a few years after he spurned Dallas at the last minute and re-signed with Los Angeles.

The 29-year-old has spent all 10 of his National Basketball Association seasons with the Clippers.

Actually, he set a career-high with 15.2 rebounds per game this season in Los Angeles.

All signs are pointing toward Jordan being a Maverick next season, but as we have seen, literally anything is possible.

Jordan's field goal percentage dipped below 70 per cent for the first time in three seasons a year ago, but part of that could be due to the departure of point guard Chris Paul. Though Golden State had a glut of centers on their roster last season, Zaza Pachulia, David West, JaVale McGee, and Kevon Looney are all scheduled to hit free agency.

Former UCLA hoopster Trevor Ariza also left his Houston Rockets for the Phoenix Suns, signing a one year deal. James made four straight Finals with the Cavaliers , winning a championship over the Warriors in 2016.

Three years later, Jordan once again has a chance to end up in Texas.

In the summer of 2015, Jordan verbally committed to signing a four-year deal with Dallas in free agency, but changed his mind shortly before the moratorium period ended.

Meanwhile, the Clippers will move on from the only center they have known since 2008.

For starters, the Clippers don't have the necessary cap space. Seven years later, the Mavericks made a strong play for Jordan, who agreed to sign with them as a free agent.

On Tuesday, the Clippers traded guard Austin Rivers to the Washington Wizards for center Marcin Gortat.

No deal can become official until July 6. If he opted in, he would be in line to make a little more than $24.1 million this season.
