Senegal put out of World Cup by harshest clause ever

Senegal put out of World Cup by harshest clause ever

Colombia's win over Senegal saw them progress at the Africans' expense and Japan also qualified for the last-16 despite losing to Poland and resting six key players.

Senegal came so close but in the end have been eliminated from the World Cup because they had received more yellow cards than Japan.

We are down to the last two groups tonight when G and H are decided and the final four teams of the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup last 16 go through.

That means for the first time since the introduction of the round of 16 in 1986, the knockout stages won't contain a single African side. That ensured Colombia and England would meet in Moscow on Tuesday (Jul 3).

The teams battled but failed to score in the first half.

GW: My suggestion or at least guess instead of drawing lots-that method Chuck Blazer just sort of decided who advanced in the Gold Cup, the same way they kind of come up with groups for the Gold Cup-but it's kind of insane when you think about it.

The high-risk strategy could easily have gone wrong for Japan had Senegal equalised against Colombia in Samara.

Both were assured of advancing in the 24-nation tournament.

There was much talk pre-match about whether it would be beneficial for England to lose this game and therefore finish second in Group G, which theoretically brings a more straightforward route to the final.

Senegal, nicknamed the Lions, lost 1-0 to their South American opponents, despite being the better side in the first half and having a penalty decision overturned.

"England are a young team that is in harmony, very confident, they have excellent individual players and they've managed to pass the group stage quite comfortably".

Jan Bednarek scored the only goal of the game as Poland signed off a disappointing campaign with a win.

Sadio Mane crashed out of the World Cup in cruel fashion but it was a special day for Trent Alexander-Arnold despite England's defeat to Belgium. They play out from the back with two young centre-backs in Tottenham's Davinson Sanchez and Barcelona's Yerry Mina both used to playing that way at club level.

Japan will need to improve against stronger opposition in the knockout stages, but the same can be said of plenty of the teams still in the tournament.

The goal came six minutes into the second half when 23-year-old Januzaj shimmied on the edge of the box and sent a ideal shot into the far corner of the net past England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
