Prime Minister's address on 4th International Yoga Day

After much deliberations, the United Nations agreed to officially designate the day.

Dehradun: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday performed Yoga with over 50,000 enthusiasts at the Forest Research Institute campus here, saying the ancient Indian discipline has emerged as the most powerful unifying force in a strife-torn world.

Addressing a large gathering with the British-era Friday building in the backdrop, Mr. Modi said yoga has shown the world the way from "illness to wellness" and enriching lives across the globe. People who suffer from arthritis can relieve their pain by doing yoga and it can also keep your joints healthy.

Addressing the gathering at Friday, he said, "In today's fast changing time, Yoga binds together a person's body, brain and soul, hence making one experience a feeling of peace".

Modi stated: 'Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition.

The prime minister also took to social media to share the intricacies of various yoga asanas.

"In yoga, we have the flawless solution to the problems we face, either as individuals or in our society", the Prime Minister said.

The psychiatrist further explained that yoga can be used as a form of therapy for drug addicts because it enhances natural opioids which is a subtle means of easing pain and enhancing euphoria.

After addressing the gathering, PM Modi performed different Yoga asanas along with other Yoga enthusiasts present at the venue.

Asides from the physical benefits, one of the best benefits of yoga is how it helps a person manage stress, a condition known to have devastating effects on the body and mind.

For the International Yoga Day (IDY) 2018, the AYUSH Ministry is all set to organise a tour for the overseas Yoga professionals to the "Yoga's birthplace" that is the southern state of Kerala. It is a passport to health assurance, a key to fitness and wellness. "The spread of yoga has brought the world closer to India and India closer to the world", he added.

Modi portrays himself as a keen yoga practitioner, last week posting on Twitter his morning routine involving plodding around a tree and flexing over a boulder.
