Uruguay make their best start to a World Cup since 1954

Uruguay make their best start to a World Cup since 1954

Russia's 3-1 win over Egypt on Tuesday means both they and Uruguay have collected maximum points from their two Group A games.

It made Suarez the first Uruguayan player to score in three different World Cups as he sealed legendary status for his country.

However, Uruguay began to gain control of the match after 65 minutes, keeping a good shape at the back and not giving Saudi Arabia space to maneuver.

Despite securing progress to the last 16, long-serving boss Tabarez, who has now guided the two-time world champions past the group stages at the last three World Cups, admitted his team were below par.

The Sky Blue should have beaten Egypt by a wider margin than they did but Luis Suarez could not finish multiple chances.

Undaunted by their opposition, Mexico adopted a thrilling, attack-minded approach, continually threatening the German defense. Millions more Mexicans lauded El Tri's performance on social media and shared memes that took a humorous look at the triumph.

While Uruguay has done just enough to get past two lackluster opponents in its two Group Stage wins, there's a sense that we haven't seen the best of the South American side, that is one of just five countries to have won the World Cup a few times.

Saudi Arabia initially showed far greater defensive resilience following their hammering at the hands of Russian Federation, only for Al Owais - who replaced Abdullah Al-Mayoof in the side - to gift Uruguay the opener in the 23rd minute.

"What we wanted was to win and move on to the next phase". They will face each other on Monday in Samara with first place in Group A on the line.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani started alongside Suarez as the pair look to add to their combined tally of 93 global goals.

"That was a huge blow to us and I'm proud of how my players came back from it", Pizzi said. I thought he played a lot better today in this match, especially because he was fighting hard, he was very fit, very physical. "That's what I know".
