Costa leads Spain past Iran

Diego Costa's knee snatched Spain victory in a wild game in Rostov.

Iran took an early lead in Group B after upsetting Morocco in its opening match, while Spain earned one point from its thrilling 1-1 draw with Portugal in its group stage opener. Whatever you've got planned for Monday night, cancel it. Spain simply could not move the ball quickly enough to get around the back or between the men, and as such created very little.

Costa - who scored twice in Friday's pulsating 3-3 draw with Portugal - eventually found the breakthrough, though, when Ramin Rezaeian's attempted clearance cannoned off his leg and into the bottom-left corner.

Not an impressive result for Spain, who didn't look almost as sharp in attack as they did in the 3-3 draw against Portugal to open the tournament.

The entire Iranian bench poured onto the pitch when Saeid Ezatolahi fired an equaliser for the Lions of Persia just before the hour.

Carlos Queiroz's team fashioned chances of their own, and came close through Madhi Taremi who put a powerful header over when well placed just 10 minutes from time.

What does Lucas Vazquez do? . Vazquez runs about a lot, but doesn't have the skill to beat his man with any regularity, and is far less of a goal threat too. But, Iran's defence was packed and frustrated their opponents, who couldn't find a way to break through.

Melania Trump 'hates' to see children separated from families at U.S. border
Sessions openly admitted when announcing the policy that children would be ripped away from their parents. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) called on Trump to end family separation during an appearance Friday on CNN .

It was not until the 25th minute that Spain had a shot on target, with Silva sending a free kick straight into the arms of keeper Ali Beiranvand. Subs: Mohammadi 6, Jahanbakhsh 6, Ghoddos 6. Subs: Koke 6, Asensio 6, Rodrigo 6.

"It has been hard for us to open the door", Carvajal added.

Facing a very compact Iranian team that came out to defend, Spain pressed high and controlled much of the game but found it hard to threaten against Iran's 10-man defence. A classic Costa finish!

Spain chalked up the 1-0 win over Iran at Kazan Arena thanks to a strike from Diego Costa. All looked possible to's offside. "The gap is just getting bigger and bigger".

"We left the pitch 1-0 down, but we won respect". That's his third goal of the World Cup!

Costa was involved in plenty of battles during the match and was accused of stamping on the foot of Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand in the first half.
