Sheriff: Deputy killed, another critical in shooting near Kansas courthouse

A Kansas sheriff's deputy was killed and another was in critical condition after being shot on Friday during a scuffle with a prisoner they were taking from jail to court for a hearing in Kansas City, officials said.

"It is very possible that with their own firearm they were both shot", Bailiff said.

Their names have not yet been released by authorities, who are investigating how the shooting unfolded near the county courthouse in Kansas City, Kan.

Both Rohrer and the other deputy were taken to the hospital in critical condition. She was pronounced dead about 12 hours later, just after midnight on Saturday.

The suspect was also shot during the incident and was taken to an area hospital for surgery.

Blair added to the Star that police were not looking for any other suspects and that the incident "is contained".

"There are witnesses we are speaking with", Zac Blair, a spokesman for the KCK police department, told the paper.

Police Capt. Lionel Colón says he doesn't know if the woman was armed with the sword when she was killed.

The shooting happened at around 11:40 a.m. Friday.

FOX4 reported that this was the fourth officer-related shooting in the past three years in Kansas City.

It also appeared that the police blocked off a street near the courthouse with a barricade.

The Associated Press is reporting that one of the deputies has died.

But that confrontation turned deadly after police were called to the busy Barney Allis Plaza right across from the KC Convention Center where thousands of teachers were in town grading AP tests and numerous people looked down from their hotels.

He continued, saying, "Ruth and I will be praying for the victims and their families, as well as all our law enforcement officers and other first responders as we come together as a community to mourn this horrific tragedy".
