U.S., Canada and Mexico to Host World Cup in 2026

U.S., Canada and Mexico to Host World Cup in 2026

After 32 years, the World Cup will return to the U.S.in 2026, but Chicago won't host any games of the soccer tournament this time around.

The joint North America bid won 67 per cent of Wednesday's vote at the FIFA Congress, defeating Morocco 134-65 with one country, Iran, voting for none of the above.

Hosts Russia will take on Saudi Arabia, the last team we beat in a World Cup game (how depressing is that?).

"Before even giving our official candidacy of the city of Montreal (for the World Cup as part of the United 2026 bid) the (Olympic Installations Board) and the provincial government already said that they were going to invest the money in the retractable roof", Filato said.

The North American bid had to overcome concerns about the effects of policies of the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Nashville was included in the 23 cities involved in the bid, meaning a World Cup game could be played in Music City.

Should he feature against Uruguay, current darling of Anfield Salah will go up against a former Kop hero in the form of Luis Suarez.

President Donald Trump supported the joint World Cup bid, though he also drew a rebuke from Federation Internationale de Football Association in April after he tweeted that "it would be a shame if countries that we always support were to lobby against the USA bid". During the next month, the men's national teams will compete in 12 venues in 11 cities around Russian Federation.

According to Yahoo, the bid called for each of the three host nations to play in the opening matches.

Canada failed in its lone previous bid - to host the 1986 tournament after Colombia pulled out as host.

Each U.S. city would host at least five matches. Only Brazil opted for Morocco, which may have been a blessing given its recent history of World Cup stewardship.

But it would be wrong to criticise this too readily as a basis for the decision, which England's FA voted for too, given that the Qatar vote was so ridiculed partly because the tiny Gulf emirate had no stadiums ready and has had to undertake a vast construction project.

There are two World Cup finals debutants this summer, Iceland and Panama, with the former faced with overcoming tournament regulars Argentina, Croatia and Nigeria, and the latter hoping to cause a major upset in Group G with Belgium, England and Tunisia. Major League Soccer is already well established in the country's three biggest cities and will remain instrumental in developing players, with Canada's most promising rising star now featuring prominently on one of its teams.
