Evacuations ordered for 304 homes in Electra Lake area

No structures have been destroyed so far, but the fire was a few hundred yards (meters) from homes with multiple aircraft dropping water and flame retardant to curtail the blaze, according to Inciweb, an interagency fire report.

La Plata County officials said there are 813 people fighting the fire.

A type-1 incident management team took command of the fire Saturday morning, meaning additional resources will be deployed to contain it.

Fire officials said in a release that the weather will likely make things worse Sunday, as more severe winds are expected.

An evacuation order was issued Friday morning for 304 homes on the east and west sides of U.S. Highway 550 from Electra Lake Drive north to Hermosa Cliffs Road and the north end of Two Dogs Trail subdivision. At 7 p.m. the San Juan National Forest was in the process of issuing closure orders for this fire.

The fire is now around 10 percent contained, and around one quarter of a mile away from the nearest residential structure.

The 416 Fire grew significantly on the west and northwest sides on Sunday.

As the weather persists, La Plata County commissioners will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday to consider enacting Stage 3 fire restrictions.

A red flag warning was in place from 10 10 p.m. Sunday. No structures had been lost as of Friday morning. Winds will be calm in the morning until around 10:30 a.m., and will increase to 10 to 15 miles per hour from the west/southwest in the afternoon.

Residents of about 1,300 homes have been ordered to evacuate, including 220 on Saturday.

Weather conditions will continue to be challenging.

An evacuation center and shelter is open at Escalante Middle School at 141 Baker Lane in Durango.

A wildfire that prompted evacuations from about 1,300 homes in southwestern Colorado has grown to almost 14 square miles (35 square kilometers).

Another wildfire, the Burro fire, was burning about 13 miles west of the 416 fire through the San Juan National Forest in Montezuma County, causing campers in the area to be evacuated.

U.S. Highway 550 will close indefinitely to both northbound and southbound traffic from Cometti/Mead Lane in Hermosa at mile point 32.2, to Cascade just north of Purgatory at mile point 53.
