Andrew Garfield won the Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for his role of Prior Walter in Angels of America.

He burst out expletives against United States President Donald Trump in front of the audience at New York's Radio City Music Hall.

As is to be expected in a room filled with multitalented actors, singers and other artists, the crowd obliged.

As is tradition, Sunday's ceremony gave each of the shows nominated for Best Musical (The Band's Visit, Mean Girls, Frozen and SpongeBob SquarePants) and Best Revival of a Musical (Carousel, My Fair Lady and Once on This Island) a chance to shine on the world's greatest stage: television.

The Tony Awards also addressed issues of authenticity and equity in casting.

We got a taste of The Band's Visit - this year's victor for Best Musical, among many other victories - via Katrina Lenk's haunting performance of "Omar Sharif". "May we, their descendants, never lose sight of what they taught us", he said. Bareilles cohosted the Tonys with Josh Groban.

They will be joined only by translators and will spend a couple of hours before admitting their close advisers to the meeting. He left early, and as he flew to Singapore , he tweeted that he was yanking the US out of the traditional group statement.

The British-American won best actor for his role in Angels in America, which explores the Aids crisis in the USA during the 1980s.

"It is a spirit that says no to oppression", he continued. The intimate show, "Springsteen on Broadway" - or as De Niro referred to it, "Jersey Boy" - features the Boss performing his music and sharing stories from his 2016 autobiography "Born to Run".

The award speech for Best Musical at the end of the night even included some butchered Hebrew (it seems a producer was just trying to say "I love you" to his kids), and echoed the recurring themes of the evening of diversity and tolerance ("In the end we are far more alike than different.").

Angels in America - a two-part play which lasts nearly eight hours - was first shown in 1991, but Andrew told Newsbeat a year ago that the play's message is still relevant.

Lastly, a group of theater students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School sang "Seasons of Love" from Rent as a tribute to the lives lost in the senseless shooting in Parkland, Fla.
