Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un arrive in Singapore for historic summit

Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un arrive in Singapore for historic summit

His arrival followed a dramatic departure from the G7 summit in Canada. He later strolled along the harbor at the heart of the central business district with Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, who tweeted out a selfie with Kim.

The top news lately has instead been tremendously mundane, all things considered - a visit by Kim to a seafood restaurant in Pyongyang.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced this on Sunday, adding that the June 12 summit will give Singapore global publicity and demonstrate the country's standing in the worldwide community. "This says something about Singapore's relations with America and North Korea, and also our standing in the global community".

Hammering out a complete plan for North Korea's denuclearization would be "an impossible chore" at this summit, Michael O'Hanlon of the Brookings Institution told NPR. "Thanks to your honest efforts. we were able to complete the preparation for the historic summit".

Though Trump has been criticized for his failure to demand more concessions from North Korea before agreeing to a face-to-face meeting, which experts say gives Kim the sort of legitimacy on the worldwide stage he desires, downplaying expectations does two things.

Visitors to Sentosa who are entering the island via cable cars can expect to encounter bag checks or be diverted from existing gantry lanes on the Sentosa's Gateway from Tuesday to Wednesday (12-13 June) as part of enhanced security measures for the upcoming Trump-Kim summit.

In return, Kim, said to be in his mid-thirties, called Trump "mentally deranged" and a "dotard".

Turns out, North Korea's Dear Leader is not staying at the Fullerton Hotel as initially posited by The Washington Post. Trump and Kim lookalikes held a summit of their own at a local shopping mall, while one bistro is offering a libation known as the Trump-Kim "Bromance:" Beer, tequila, diet Coke and the Korean distilled rice liquor known as soju.

Previous year the North carried out what was by far its most powerful nuclear test to date and launched a flurry of missiles - including two over Japan - while Trump threatened Pyongyang with "fire and fury" and Kim dubbed him a "mentally deranged US dotard".

Discussions at the United States-North Korean summit have "moved more quickly than expected", White House officials said Monday. On the US side, Trump was to be joined by Pompeo, chief of staff John Kelly, national security adviser John Bolton and US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, along with a few others. I feel that Kim Jong Un wants to do something great for his people, and he has that opportunity.

While en route to Singapore, Trump said he looked forward to meeting Kim on what he anticipated would be an exciting day.

The official did not rule out the possibility that additional activities could be added to tomorrow's schedule, beyond the two planned meetings with Kim, ABC News' Jordyn Phelps reports.
