Formula One: Glum Hamilton unhappy to start Canadian GP from fourth

The crowds in Montreal saw the fastest ever laps on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, and the Mercedes garage were not happy to be outstripped for speed. From the number of red flags with the prancing pony logo, the Italian squad remains the clear favourite in the grandstands.

It was the 300th F1 race for two-time champion Fernando Alonso of McLaren, good for fourth all-time. The Briton has won the last three on the track that seems to suit the Mercedes vehicle with its heavy braking after long straightaways and tight chicanes.

Before the race, 1997 champion Jacques Villeneuve drove the No. 12 Ferrari his late father Gilles used to win the 1978 Canadian GP in the parade lap.

Lewis Hamilton complained of intermittent power loss from fourth place, and with Daniel Ricciardo - who had jumped Kimi Raikkonen for fifth, bearing down on him, the Mercedes driver was recalled to the pits for an early tire change and to add some cooling to the vehicle. "When we got to qualifying, honestly we knew it was going to be very close as it was, but in my heart, I truly feel like we had the pace to lock out the front row, or at least I had the pace to be on the front row".

He retired in Azerbaijan after a collision with Ricciardo and in China he tangled with Hamilton and Vettel, finishing fifth after a 10-second penalty demoted him from fourth, while Ricciardo won the race. He and Ferrari executed their race to perfection, took the lead in the title race and have left Hamilton and Mercedes with much to consider before racing resumes in France in a fortnight.

"This morning when I went out straight away it felt a lot better".

Daniel Ricciardo was in P4 after keeping Hamilton off his tail.

We'll give you a few pointers shortly in what to look out for in today's race but it could once more be an interesting one for strategy, with how long each driver can make the hypersoft and ultrasoft tyres last a critical aspect.

On the basis of Friday practice, Sebastian Vettel does not see himself as a contender for victory even though Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen set the second fastest time. "I was a lot happier with the vehicle and I think we can carry that into the race". Vettel said. "I brushed the wall and lost some time getting ready for the second session".
