McConnell Cancels August Recess Over ‘Historic Obstruction by Senate Democrats’

"He doesn't support the legislation, he opposes it", Corker said.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said President Donald Trump called him Wednesday morning and asked him not to file a bill asserting congressional authority over tariffs.

Sen. Bob Corker said Tuesday that "a large number" of Senate Republicans are supporting his call for legislation challenging President Trump's decision to impose steep tariffs on US trading partners.

Corker says there's "no way" automobiles and the other imports are a national security threat. "He is scared to death. that Republicans might lose control over the Senate", Sanders said.

It's not just Trump, the senators say, but past administrations that have leaned too heavily into the national security provision the lawmakers now want to subject to congressional oversight. "If tariffs are taking away from that, that's certainly something that would not be helpful".

The Illinois Democrat said he was willing to start working on health care whenever Republicans were.

He said the move was to deal with a legislative backlog, which he blamed on Democratic obstruction.

Canada, Mexico and the European Union are now subject to a 25% tariff on steel and a 10% tariff on aluminum.

The EU says it will introduce "rebalancing" tariffs on about 2.8 billion euros' ($3.4 billion) worth of USA steel, agricultural and other products, including bourbon, peanut butter, cranberries and orange juice.

The tariffs angered many Republicans, who fear they will touch off a trade war with American allies. "Finally, a lot of time had gone by, and I had other meetings". For a 60-day period following submission, legislation to approve the proposal will qualify for expedited consideration, guaranteeing the opportunity for debate and a vote.

"We're not there confronting the president on tariffs".

In North Dakota, exporting is critical for farmers, ranchers and manufacturers, Heitkamp said, "but the administration's wrongheaded trade policies are putting their livelihoods in jeopardy". "Given his horrendous recruits, Senator McConnell is right to be terrified of Senate Democrats on the campaign trail, but whenever the GOP Congress is in session they find new ways to alienate and disgust voters", he said.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Tuesday that he would keep lawmakers in Washington for most of the month. But he did not shoot down the idea of attaching it to the defense legislation.

It's not as though the current Congress accomplished so much that it needs the break.

The European Union says it will start imposing duties from July on a list of USA products in response to President Donald Trump's decision to slap tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Europe.

"The US business and agriculture community is profoundly concerned about how newly imposed tariffs - and the inevitable foreign retaliation arriving in the next few weeks - will lead to lost American jobs", Bradley said in a statement. "Huge economic policy decisions like tariffs shouldn't be taken lightly, and Congress should serve as a needed check to make sure we aren't losing out in the end".
