Roland Garros: Simona Halep overcomes Angelique Kerber

Roland Garros: Simona Halep overcomes Angelique Kerber

Muguruza, victor two years ago, will face either world number one Simona Halep or Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, the last woman to win the French Open without dropping a set was Justine Henin, who did so in back-to-back years in 2006 and 2007. "So I think that's why I won today", Halep said. "My head won it", Halep said.

Muguruza, the 2016 champion, earlier thrashed Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-1 to reach the semi-finals, condemning the Russian to her worst Grand Slam defeat in more than six years.

A Grand Slam win in Paris would bring redemption for Halep, who lost in the 2017 French Open final against Jelena Ostapenko after leading by a set and three games. The victor earns a berth in the final at Roland Garros, plus the number one ranking that now belongs to Halep.

"After the first set I just stayed strong, I did not give up at all", Halep said.

World number one Halep was runner-up in Paris in 2014, where she was beaten by Maria Sharapova, and previous year, going down to Jelena Ostapenko after squandering a set and 3-0 lead.

"When you're facing somebody that also has an aggressive style of game", Muguruza said about facing Sharapova, "I think it's about who takes the command, who takes the first opportunity".

Sharapova and Williams were due to clash in the fourth round on Monday but the American pulled out at the last minute of their eagerly-awaited grudge match with injury.

The women got their matches done before rain arrived at Roland Garros, leaving the men's quarterfinals suspended in progress.

Spain's Garbine Muguruza has yet to drop a set in the tournament.

Nadal was broken three times and lost the opening set of his quarterfinal Wednesday against 11th-seeded Diego Schwartzman of Argentina by a score of 6-4.

Halep is aware she can not afford another poor start on Thursday against 24-year-old Muguruza who has been tested just once in Paris and that was in the first round where fellow former victor Svetlana Kuznetsova pushed her to a tiebreak in the first set. Ironically, perhaps, the only one missing is the Slam everyone expects her to someday win: Wimbledon.

Spain´s Garbine Muguruza (R) is congratulated by Russia´s Maria Sharapova after winning, at the end of their women´s singles quarter-final match on day eleven of The Roland Garros 2018 French Open on June 6, 2018.

On Court Suzanne Lenglen, Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro were locked in a first-set tiebreak when play was called off. Muguruza isn't giving he opponent many chances to breathe, and that's the reason for her quick success in these recent matches.

Kerber got off to a flying start. I didn't manage to find the rhythm, to be focused on my match.

The last time the two were scheduled to play was in Qatar in February, but Halep was forced to retire. That she's into her first Slam semifinal on Roland Garros' red clay may seem a surprise to many, but Keys has had European clay success before.
