Designer Kate Spade Found Dead In Upper East Side Apartment

Spade's handbags were a must-have, and she ranked among the NY designers to cement the minimalist look.

Law enforcement officials told NBC News that she was found at her Park Avenue residence by her housekeeper at around 10.20am.

After leaving Kate Spade in 2007, the designer and her husband launched Frances Valentine - a line of shoes, handbags and accessories named after their 13-year-old daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade. They spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Her death appears to be a suicide by the way of hanging and a note was left at the scene.

Spade, 55, rose to prominence in fashion starting with her line of handbags in the 1990s, starting a company along with husband Andy Spade. The brand now has 140 stores in the United States and an additional 175 retail outlets around the world.

Hours after her shocking suicide, Kate Spade's family has issued a statement. Last year, the brand was purchased by Coach for US$2.4 billion (S$3.2 billion).

Fans wrote of how simply owning something with Kate Spade's name on it was special.
