Apple improves Photo search and sharing in iOS 12

Closing off the iOS 12 presentation was the unveiling of Memoji - personalised emoji based on a user's appearance which can be customised - and FaceTime upgrades. If you've got an Apple device (iPhone, iPad or Mac) with Safari installed, simply head over to the official WWDC website to watch the live stream.

Apple has made iOS 12 available for all devices that can now run iOS 11. Apple will be live streaming the keynote as it happens, but there's a catch: you need to have an Apple device to watch the event.

Reports suggest that Apple will also expand the functionality of the iPhone X's facial recognition system, which now only serves to unlock the phone and allow mobile payments.

The first public beta of iOS 12 will be available later this month, while the full version will be released later this autumn, most probably in September. Bloomberg reports that the company wants to spread the wealth of the iOS App Store to desktop computers and will announce a new feature that lets iPhone apps run on Macs. "We're very excited about the new communications features we're bringing to iPhone and iPad with Memoji, a more personal form of Animoji, fun camera effects and Group FaceTime", said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering.

This includes improved processor performance, which now peaks quicker when it is needed, and then ramps down quickly to save battery life. In times of high load, these CPU tweaks should mean that apps last twice as fast. Daily and weekly reports will track notifications, indicate the time spent in individual apps, and even note how often users are picking up their devices. If an app is sucking up too much of your time, you can set your own limit, such as one hour a day for Instagram. Users can also set time limits for apps and when time is up, they are notified. There's also a larger array of controls for muting notifications and grouping alerts to reduce the number sent to a user.

Israel and Hamas are bitter enemies and have fought three wars since the group seized control of Gaza in 2007. The Palestinian Health Ministry says a woman was killed by Israeli fire during a protest at the Gaza Strip.

The way apps notify you is about to change in several major ways.

Apple is also planning an update to ARKit, its platform for developers to build augmented-reality experiences on iPhones and iPads, which it announced previous year. The upcoming ARKit 2 should provide developers with tools for object detection, image tracking, and creating shared AR experiences.

FaceTime has also been integrated into Messages, so a group message can be turned into a group FaceTime call.

Apple is upgrading your iPhone's notifications with iOS 12. Apple said it was working on "new features and enhancements" to address the concerns, and in March added a new webpage to educate parents about existing controls.
