Zinedine Zidane steps down as Real Madrid coach

Zinedine Zidane quit as Real Madrid coach on Thursday (Friday NZ Time), less than a week after leading the team to its third straight Champions League title, saying the club needed a change in command.

Cristiano Ronaldo says he is "proud" to have played under Zinedine Zidane after the Frenchman announced his decision to stand down as Real Madrid boss. "After three years I need another discourse, another method of working", he told the hastily convened press conference.

"I have thought a lot about this decision and I can't go back on it".

Zidane said in a news press conference that it was the right time to leave Real Madrid before he thanked Florentino Perez and the club.

"There are really handsome moments, ending in a spectacular moment winning the third Champions League, but there are hard moments too", Zidane said. "I had to do this for everyone".

The 45-year-old manager has resigned from his Real role just five days after guiding the club to a third successive Champions League title.

Ryan Gaydos is an editor for Fox News. It's a club I love and I love the president too, he brought me to this huge club and I will always be grateful, but I think a change is needed so I will not be here next season.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was substituted in the 31th minute of Saturday's match following a challenge from Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos. "This is the right moment for all involved - for me, for the squad, for the club".

He said that he first he had heard of the decision was on Wednesday and it had taken him aback.

"After three years, it's my decision and perhaps I can get it wrong, but I think that after such time it is the moment".

"This team has to continue winning and need a change".

"That's why I chose to take this decision".

"Being a coach is extremely tiring - more so at a club like Real Madrid, When I feel there is nothing more to give, I'll walk away", he added.

"This was a totally unexpected decision", Perez said, per The BBC.
