United States entertainment trade daily Variety has reported that the sequel has the title Top Gun: Maverick and focuses on drone technology. After all, that wouldn't make the movie about drones in the way that Kosinski was saying, but they would still be part of the story as these pilots have to deal with the evolution of their industry.

Joseph Kosinski will be behind the camera, who directed Cruise in the futuristic actioner Oblivion in 2013, following the late Tony Scott's benchmark original. Jerry Bruckheimer also will return to produce the sequel along with David Ellison and Cruise, THR reported. Top Gun: Maverick is set to hit theaters on July 12, 2019.
