North Korea Issues Directives to Prevent Unrest Over Uncertainty About US Summit

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is meeting with a top North Korean official in NY.

Any diplomatic agreement in which North Korea agreed to give up its nuclear weapons could take as long as 10 years to implement, according to a new analysis from former USA officials.

Mr Trump cancelled the planned summit last week, which was due to to be held in Singapore on June 12, due to the "tremendous anger and open hostility" in a recent statement from North Korea.

He is the only North Korean official who attended all of Kim's meetings with South Korean President Moon Jae In and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

There had been speculation in the South Korean media that Gen. Kim would be carrying a letter for Mr. Trump to respond to the one the president sent to the North Korean leader last week.

Arriving in New York, Kim Yong-chol was driven to a hotel close to the United Nations, in midtown Manhattan, where had dinner with Pompeo for about an hour and a half.

Pompeo met with Kim Yong Chol, one of the North Korean leader's closest aides, at the apartment residence of the US deputy ambassador to the United Nations in NY.

Trump, the official said, "can make a fly or no-fly decision anytime he wants", referring to the possible Singapore summit.

"For North Korea, Russia is less important compared to South Korea, the United States and China", Andrei Lankov, a professor of Korean Studies at Kookmin University in Seoul, told Al Jazeera.

Pompeo also said he had a "working dinner" with Kim Yong Chol, adding that their menu included steak, corn, and cheese. "The secretary of state is from the heartland and likes American food, and he's hosting someone who's never been to our country", the official said.

The administration is arguing that if the North Koreans want security, it can not come from nuclear weapons.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang on Thursday and invited him to visit, moving to raise Moscow's profile in worldwide efforts to ease tensions on the Korean peninsula.

There were reports earlier on Wednesday that South Korean officials were noting "quite significant" differences between the United States and North Korea over denuclearisation.

"Come to Russia. We would be very happy to see you", Lavrov, seated across a table from Kim, said during a televised meeting.

Asked whether the Kim-Trump summit will still be held on June 12 in Singapore, Nauert said, "That is what we're planning for", and, like the White House, affirmed that Washington will "certainly be prepared" even if for some reason it "takes place at a later date". He is also on the State Affairs Commission, the North Korean government's supreme policymaking organization.

"I think it's a pretty big deal and to me this raises whatever the estimates were of the summit actually occurring", she told CNN.
