Dawnta Harris, teen suspect, said he 'drove at' Maryland officer, records show

Baltimore County police Officer Amy Caprio was killed Monday afternoon while investigating a call about a suspicious vehicle in the Perry Hall community northeast of Baltimore, authorities said.

"There were reports on her being run over or being shot or both, but that will not be confirmed until the autopsy is complete", Baltimore County Police Department spokesman Matt Kuhn said in a phone interview.

A manhunt was under way on Tuesday by heavily armed Maryland police officers with dogs for three people suspected of killing a police officer during a suspected burglary, officials said. He is charged as an adult with first-degree murder. He said he hopes to prosecute them on charges of felony murder, even though they were not in the auto when the officer was run over.

Harris was scheduled to appear before a judge this afternoon in Towson.

An intense manhunt involving aircraft and trained dogs is underway Tuesday in a greater Baltimore suburb after a female officer was killed by four suspects believed to be armed and risky, as authorities announced a 16-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the slaying. Dawnta Harris from Baltimore admits that he "drove at the officer [Caprio]" after she told him to get out of the auto. "I don't know, I just feel like talking about it is definitely better than not".

"I heard, 'Get out of the vehicle!"

Police spokeswoman Julia Hardgrove said the officer was injured while investigating a vehicle on Linwen Way in the community of Perry Hall.

Baltimore County authorities said the officer was taken to a local hospital after the incident Monday afternoon, and that police were searching for at least one armed suspect. Three other teen suspects are in custody according to police. The callers said the subjects had broken into one home, the documents state. According to the documents, the caller told the dispatcher that the officer had confronted the driver of the Jeep and was "on the ground".

Eye witnesses have described Caprio's approach of the vehicle. The documents indicate Caprio suffered "traumatic injuries" in the road. She had been with the department for four years. Harris matched that description and was stopped about a block from the abandoned Jeep, according to court documents.

Serena Williams denied seeding at French Open
Williams tweeted that, for the second time in a week, she was being asked to produce a sample for an anti-doping test. There's no love for Serena Williams at the French Open. "So yeah, I definitely think that would be a nice change".

Sam Abed, Maryland secretary of juvenile services, said his department had been trying to put Harris into custody before the death of Caprio. Witnesses identified him as the driver of the Jeep.

Harris, who was arrested near where a Jeep was found abandoned, told a detective he had been waiting in the driver's seat of the vehicle as other associates of his were in the process of committing a burglary, according to the probable cause statement. He said he tried to flee in the Jeep when he saw police arrive.

"She was young. It just breaks your heart", he said.

Kurek said that his son saw the officer draw her weapon on the suspect, ordering him out of the auto.

Investigators have reviewed the slain officer's body camera footage, prosecutor William Bickel said during the hearing.

Volunteer firefighter Logan Kurek says he ran outside and performed CPR on the officer until paramedics arrived, and says her injuries were consistent with being run over by a auto.

"'Dad, Dad, a cop just got run over out front, '" the son called out. "She was the kind of officer that was going to go up in this organization and lead".

The account reported that another of the man's sons began performing CPR.

The death stunned the quiet, residential neighborhood where the officer was killed. About 8 p.m. Monday, the Baltimore County school system said students at the three schools could be picked up by parents under conditions of tight security.
