West Bengal Panchayat polls

CPI (M) is somehow occupies the 2 position with 41 blocks. His son Hakimul Islam, who is wanted by the police in the same case, wins from a gram panchayat seat in Polerhat II.

In West Bengal's Bhangar, which has been on the boil for the past year over the state government's construction of a power grid sub-station, Independent candidates backed by Jomi-Jibika-Bastutantra O Poribesh Rokkha Committee (committee for protecting life, livelihood, ecology and environment) won five out of the eight Gram Panchayat seats wherever voting took place. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Left Front have won or were leading in 24 and seven seats, respectively.

The TMC outraced others in panchayat samiti seats too by winning 3,598 of them so far and leading in another 239. "The BJP is a distant second, but clearly a very distinct one", said Prasenjit Bose, an economist and a social activist.

The independents have won 77 panchayat samiti seats, they said.

Statistics reveal that of the total 58,692 seats in the three tiers of the rural local bodies, 20,076 seats, or 34.2 per cent, have been decided uncontested, with the Trinamool bagging a whopping proportion of these seats. "Many BJP and Independent candidates contacted us after their win".

The western part of Bengal, especially the tribal belt of West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura has thrown up many independent candidates, who put up a tough fight, notwithstanding terror, intimidation and resistance of all possible means to come out victorious.

Whereas in Gram Panchayats (GPs), TMC got good competition from the BJP.

In Murshidabad, the TMC has bagged 466 seats, followed by the Congress with 83 seats. Veering towards middle-level panchayat samiti seats, ruling TMC has so far won 95 panchayat samiti seats and is leading in another 65, while the other parties haven't performed on par with the TMC. In South 24 Parganas district, TMC is leading in 370 seats, BJP in 25.

As was expected, TMC has swept most of the gram panchayat (GP), pachayat samiti (PS) and zilla parishad (ZP) seats across 19 districts as counting of votes across 291 centres continued till late on Thursday evening. A total of 622 zilla parishad seats were contested on May 14 across 17 districts of the state.

Of the 48,650 seats in 3,358 gram panchayats, 16,814 were uncontested and of the 9,217 seats in 341 panchayat samitis, 3,059 were uncontested. "Had the elections been free and fair, we would have won 50 per cent seats at all the three levels of the panchayat", state BJP general secretary Sayantan Basu said.

The panchayat polls have been marred by violence since the nomination phase with several people being killed on May 14 election day.

The CPI (M) and the Congress dubbed the election a "farce". Overall, it's the show of Mamata's TMC.
