Trump promises North Korea's Kim can stay in power

Nevertheless, Trump warned that the USA had "decimated" Libya and that the same could be done to North Korea if no deal is made between Washington and Pyongyang.

Short days ago, plans for a historic meeting between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared to be set.

Speaking at an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Trump also said he will not discuss USA troop levels in South Korea during his meeting with Kim.

"But there should be no mistake that if we don't see that commitment to denuclearization then we're not going to make the mistakes of past administrations and fall into endless discussions with North Korea", he added in a recent interview with Fox News.

Trump says his team is now making arrangements for the meeting scheduled for June 12 in Singapore.

Holding South Korea completely responsible for the suspension of inter-Korean talks, he also blamed Seoul for expressing regret over Pyongyang's decision to suspend the talks, "far from thinking over the meaning of the step taken by North Korea and taking necessary follow-up measures". She added the annual exercises are long-planned, defensive in nature and meant to ensure the readiness of US and South Korean forces.

But that now looks less likely following North Korea's statement.

White House National Security adviser John Bolton with US President Donald Trump.

What has upset North Korea?

"We just can't do it", he said. "If it doesn't, we'll continue the maximum pressure campaign that's been ongoing".

North Korea's chief negotiator with the South called the South Korean government "ignorant and incompetent" on Thursday and threatened to halt all talks with Seoul unless its demands are met. And Bolton sitting beside Trump, and across the table from Kim Jong Un in Shanghai, may be inhibiting. It said we are not going to denuclearise if you're going to hold a gun to our head.

Udall also asked Pruitt how he came to pay below-market rent for a condo owned by a lobbyist with business before the EPA. Udall pointed out that Pruitt - the former attorney general Oklahoma - should have known better.

"All parties, especially the United States, should cherish this opportunity for peace and should not work as a barrier", he said.

Drawing on those comments, Trump also warned Kim of the alternative to striking a denuclearization deal: the decimation of North Korea and Kim's removal from power.

A statement published by the state-run Korea Central News Agency, said North Korea would never accept economic assistance from the U.S. in exchange for unilaterally abandoning its nuclear programme.

Bolton never said publicly that the US should promote regime change in North Korea, but USA -allied rebels killed former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Last month, Bolton told CBS News' "Face the Nation" moderator Margaret Brennan the US was "looking at the Libya model of 2003, 2004", when Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi agreed to completely end his nuclear weapons program in exchange for sanctions relief.

"And if it does that's fine and if it doesn't I think we'll probably have a very successful meeting".

In an effort to put his planned landmark summit with Kim back on track, Trump said on Thursday that North Korea "will get protections that will be very strong" if the meeting were to go ahead successfully.

After Pyongyang railed this week that the U.S. "The best thing he could do is make a deal".

Trump attempted to clarify Bolton's comments, saying Bolton was referring to the approach the USA would take if talks failed.

May 9: Pompeo, now USA secretary of state, makes an unannounced one-day trip to Pyongyang to prepare for the planned Trump-Kim summit. Trump tweeted, "This is very good news for North Korea and the World" and "big progress!"
