Simpson marches to 4-stroke Players win

In all the rounds that have been played on the PGA Tour, no one has ever lost a 7-shot lead.

And now here he is, ranking among the best putters and feeling like one of them. The Stadium course at TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte Verde, Florida.

The 14-time major victor fell a few feet short of providing the first real drama Sunday on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.

Only when he had the crystal trophy did he start to crack. Woods has won five times but hasn't played since 2015. He holed his second shot on the par-5 16th for an albatross, birdied the 17th but parred the closing hole when a birdie would have given him the course record. - Webb Simpson never really knew anything else.

After the final round, Woods revealed he would like to qualify for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August but he would have to either win a tournament or be ranked among the top 50 in the world to qualify. Four-time Major victor McIlroy is going to be one of the all-time greats but he misses cuts like anyone else, which Tiger did not do.

Simpson finished last season at No. 88 in the key putting statistic (strokes gained), and he didn't miss a cut the rest of the year after Clark's tip. Mickelson finished at 8 over par and missed the cut by 9 shots.

Despite his position, Simpson said he saw room for improvement."I felt like today was a good day overall but then I wasn't quite as sharp as I'd like to be", he said."I dropped a couple shots but overall, I felt like we had a great game plan and we stuck to it". He thought he had turned the corner with some decent finishes in tournaments, but there weren't any wins to show for it.

Charl Schwartzel, Jimmy Walker and 2017 Rookie of the Year Xander Schauffele shared second place with Jason Day and Jason Dufner sharing fifth. Early in Woods round, he made four birdies looking like he was making a run at the lead.

But that too could not save Antonio Conte from his inevitable sacking as Chelsea have already lined up a list of replacements. He avoids the question; he doesn't want to answer it". "I have a contract and the club know very well the situation".

Simpson's seven-stroke lead after 54 holes was more than useful but the 32-year-old is due huge credit for his nerveless approach to Sunday.

Danny Lee of New Zealand walks off the green on the 17th hole during THE PLAYERS Championship 2018. Webb received a message from his mother that she wanted him to win after her house may have caught on fire. With 139 yards left to the hole, he hit his approach to just under 18 feet and rolled in the putt for his third consecutive birdie to get to 3-under for the day and 11-under for the tournament. FedExCup leader: Justin Thomas.

Woods shot a 3-under 69 in the final round and tied for 11th at 11-under 277.

In another stroke of brilliance from a player now ranked 41st in the world, Simpson proceeded to hole his third shot for an eagle that stretched his lead to seven strokes.Simpson struggled somewhat in playing the 14th through the 16th in one-over. "He's certainly playing well enough to do so".

Others surged at various times during the day but all, like Woods, eventually faltered as Simpson ground out one solid hole after another.

A par at the final hole gave Tiger a final-round 69, which he says he was disappointed with after hitting the ball so well.

The 14-time major champion's all-round game looked in excellent shape and he made another gain at the 11th, just missing out on an eagle when a lengthy putt slid just by the hole. He was happy he won the tournament.
