Russia Urges 'Restraint on All Sides' after Israeli Strikes in Syria

Germany's chancellor, like Macron, supports the 2015 Iran nuclear deal that U.S. President Donald Trump's signalled this week he would withdraw from, a decision generally supported by Israel.

Israel struck suspected Iranian targets in Syrian just hours after Trump announced the United States' withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

"We will not let Iran turn Syria into a forward base against Israel".

There had been no comment from Iranian officials.

"We hit almost all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria", Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman told a security conference. "If it will rain in Israel, there will be a biblical flood on the other side".

Sirens blasted in Golan Heights during the attack and the IDF told residents to stay in the bomb shelters.

Washington, May 10 Iran's "reckless" deployment of offensive rocket and missile systems into Syria aimed at Israel is a highly unsafe development for the entire Middle East, the White House today said, underlining that Israel has a "right to act in self-defence". A video shared on social media appeared to show rockets making their way from Syria toward Israel.

It is reportedly the first time since 1974 that there have been military clashes over the Israeli-occupied Syrian territory of the Golan Heights.

On Tuesday, the IDF went on high alert in anticipation of an Iranian response, in addition to calling up a limited number of reserve troops "on an as needed basis".

Four of the rockets were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome antimissile defense system, and the rest fell short of the Israeli-controlled territory, the military said.

Russian Federation was informed prior to the Israeli operation, the IDF spokesperson said.

Lieberman called the rocket fire "a new phase".

It said three people were killed and two wounded, without specifying their nationalities. The Iranian launcher was also destroyed from which the missiles were launched into Israel last night.

Bahrain is a close ally of Saudi Arabia and the two countries, whose foreign policies are often in lockstep, view Iran as the chief threat to the region.

Thursday's flare-up came hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returned from a visit to Moscow, where he discussed concerns over Syria with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Israel responded by attacking anti-aircraft positions in Syria, but an Israeli warplane was shot down during the battle. "Also Israel launched more than ten tactical surface-to-surface missiles", the Defense Ministry said.

Israel fears a multi-pronged assault by Iran's proxies that has been bolstered by what the Islamic Republic calls the "axis resistance", a corridor that runs from Iran, through Iraq and Syria, and into Lebanon.
