Iraq says five Daesh commanders captured after crossing from Syria

Five top leaders for the Islamic State, including a direct aide to leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, have been captured by Iraqi agents, Reuters reported on Thursday.

The U.S. -led coalition says Iraqi forces in coordination with U.S. -backed Syrian forces have captured five senior Islamic State group leaders. Jamal was shown on Iraqi state television on Wednesday night, wearing a yellow prison uniform.

The result of the three-month operation to capture the terrorist leaders, who had been hiding in Syria and Turkey, represents an important victory for the Iraqi and USA intelligence agencies.

Iraq's external intelligence agency published a statement confirming the arrests, but did not mention any details of the role played by the Americans or the Turks.

Two Iraqi officials explained to the NY daily, on condition of anonymity, that they had been following the trail of several of the IS leaders for months, but early this year they received intelligence information that led to their arrests.

An Iraqi intelligence unit responsible for undercover missions had tracked Ismail Alwaan al-Ithawi, an Iraqi known by the nom de guerre Abu Zeid al-Iraqi, from Syria to the Turkish city of Sakarya, about 160km east of Istanbul, these officials said.

Following the capture, intelligence agents from both Iraq and the United States uncovered bank accounts used by the Islamic State and also secret communication codes used by Eithawi.

A year ago the Pentagon said that there were "some indicators" that IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was still alive a month after Russian Federation claimed to have killed him in a strike near the Syrian city of Raqqa.
