BMW M2 Competition revealed

BMW M2 Competition revealed

Both cars can be ordered from mid-May, but customer deliveries aren't expected until August.

That's still 3.0-liters, like the old auto, but it now pushes out 410 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque.

All UK cars feature the latest M-division sports seats, M Sport dials, front and rear parking sensors, BMW's Connected Drive system and satnav. The M Driver Package raises the speed limiter from 250 km/h to 280 km/h.

Subtle, understated looks are not high on the Competition's agenda.

The refreshed performance spec model sees a host of race-ready goodies inherited from its older siblings, the M3 and M4, in order to make it an overall more exhilarating to drive.

Although the M2's structure is unaltered, a carbon-fibre-stiffened strut brace dominates the under-bonnet view. When the M3 and M4 models first came out, a lot of people complained that they don't sound right. New colour options include Sunset Orange and the brand new Hockenheim Silver. It also gets black bat-wing-style side mirrors, a blackened treatment for the four exhaust tips and good-looking new 19-inch alloy wheels in a choice of finishes. The engine is a new version of the twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight six, with plenty in common with the unit in the M3/M4.

World number one Rafael Nadal raced past Slovenia's Aljaz Bedene to reach the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco . Second seed Marin Cilic safely negotiated a potentially-tricky opener against Fernando Verdasco, winning 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).

Headed for South Africa in September at a price yet to be announced, the M2 Competition comes in dual-clutch automatic and manual guises with the ability to scorch the 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.2 seconds (M-DCT automatic) and 4.4 seconds (six-speed manual).

Either way, the top speed is limited to 155mph unless you opt for the M Driver's package, which takes it to 173mph.

Also available is an M Driver's Package, which bumps the top speed of the coupe to 174 miles per hour, and includes a voucher for the BMW Driving Experience, a track training course located at one of two BMW Performance Centers; either on the East Coast (located in Spartanburg, SC), or West Coast (located in Thermal, CA). The M DCT has the same throttle blip tech.

Shedding speed should be no harder than gaining it - huge 400mm brake discs with six-piston grey-painted calipers are fitted up front and there's a 380mm, four-piston setup at the rear. The switches are augmented by M1 and M2 buttons on the steering wheel spokes. Buyers can also pick between orange or blue contrast stitching for the perforated leather seats. The M2 Competition replaces the standard M2 instead of being introduced as a high-performance variant of the baby M Coupe.

Optional safety systems are also available in the form of collision warning, pedestrian warning with city braking and lane departure warning.
