Kenya electoral commissioners resign from IEBC

Experts said the effect of the latest move will destabilize the commission at a time it is preparing to conduct electoral boundaries review for the 2022 election, whereas Chiloba's absence will make it hard or impossible for the secretariat to operate because the CEO by law makes the day-to-day decisions which no other commissioner can.

Troubled IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati has spoken for the first time of his resignation form the Commission after half of the team resigned on Monday, citing lack of confidence in his leadership skills.

"I still hold the view thatall IEBC Commissioners and the entire Secretariat:Chebukati, Connie Nkatha Maina and Ezra Chiloba amongst others, require a people's public trial at Uhuru Park".

"Under his leadership, the Commission boardroom has become a venue for peddling misinformation, grounds for brewing mistrust, and a space for scrambling for and chasing for individual glory and credit", the trio added.

The fallout stemmed from Chebukati's decision to send CEO Ezra Chiloba on compulsory leave last week.

City captain Vincent Kompany said: "It's the same feeling as the first time and you can't describe it". Previous times, we almost threw it away and that was a feature of every season we won it.

"For far too long and many times, the commission chair has failed to be the steady and stable hand that steers the ship in hard times and gives direction when needed. The chairman could have waited for an appropriate time - when all the commissioners are in the country - to properly call a sitting to deliberate on the matter", they said.

"The institution has continued to be dysfunctional with arbitrary decision making, leaking of internal documents to serve personal goals and pursuing of personal interests". However, he said the commission would give an official statement on the way forward upon receiving the letters.

NASA CEO Norman Magaya claimed the IEBC commissioners who resigned on Monday, April 16, were working for Deputy President William Ruto.

The Senate Leader of Minority noted Kenya will experience both political and constitutional crisis should the commission's Chairperson Wafula Chebukati not resign.

"The mistake we made was when we diverted from the legal framework put in place after new constitution on the process of constituting a new IEBC commission", said Duale who wants Chebukati and the remaining two commissioners left to resign.
